The Island of Doctor Moreau is an 1896 work by the English writer H.G. Wells. The text of the novel is the story of Edward Prendick, a shipwrecked man rescued by a ship and left on the island where Dr. Moreau resides, who creates hybrids between humans and animals through vivisection. The novel deals with a large number of philosophical themes including pain and cruelty, moral responsibility, human identity, and man’s meddling in nature. Wells describes the novel as an exercise in youthful profanity.

The Island of Dr. Moreau is an early science fiction classic and remains one of Wells’s best-known books. It has also been adapted for film and other media on numerous occasions.
