The story is set in WWI. More or less by accident, Joey, a beautiful young stallion, ended up on Albert’s father’s farm. The close bond between Albert and the horse is broken when the animal goes with the English troops to France to do its part in the First World War. After terrible war experiences, Joey and Albert are reunited in 1918. This history of friendship between man and animal is described from the perspective of the horse; it doesn’t lessen the horrors of that trench warfare.
